There's something magical about the Scandinavian 19th century. I see these societies as legions of Elves, lost, stripped of their elvendom, driven from their magical forests, chasing after all the things the other Western societies chased after, doomed to only be second-best at: modernism, industrialism, war. But in paintings like this the Elf comes through. It's the real soul of these people, that is, the land and the mystical bond to it. . . .
