Supposedly witches gather twice a year, on April 30,
the eve of May Day, and on October 31, All Hallows Eve
(...and in Denmark also on Sct. Hans in June). According
to wide spread legends, it is on these evenings that witches
would attend a party hosted by the devil. After parking
their broomsticks they would have a great old time eating,
drinking and visiting. But then they would get down to
business. They would change into other forms, cast spells
on unsuspecting people and generally wreak all
kinds of magi mischief
